A partir de 1920 cambia esta faceta por la de director, creando su propia productora, Marshall Neilan Productions, cuya actividad comprende once largometrajes, distribuidos por First National. En 1929 es contratado por RKO, pero la llegada del sonido acabara con su carrera; despues de unas pocas peliculas, entre las que se cuenta un primitivo western, abandona la realizacion.
